Maggots and Worms and Ants, Oh My!

Explorers are not like common folk. While the rest of us sleep on mattresses in homes with central air conditioning, explorers sleep on dirt and rocks, in tents, or under the stars (freezing!). While the rest of us utilize elevators and escalators for our major climbing expeditions, explorers use picks and . . . oh, whatever they’re called, to scale the sides of mountains. And, while the rest of us eat familiar appetizers at cocktail parties, members of the Explorers Club eat maggots, worms, scorpions, eyeballs, and tarantulas while deep in the heart of darkest Manhattan.

Scorpions, worms, and ants on the menu

Gene Rurka is the Explorers Club’s exotic foods expert, and an adventurous soul is he.

Rurka, a biologist who has studied coral reefs in the Virgin Islands, devotes much thought to devising dishes for the Explorers Club’s annual dinner in March where guests feast on tarantulas, maggots and exotic parts of various livestock such as eyeballs, testicles and penises.

I don’t know about you, but I am incredibly satisfied and enormously happy to be counted among the common folk.

tarantula $175 each. Yum!
